Green Space Startups

ESA BIC Startups from Baden-Württemberg and other ESA BICs are active in the areas of sustainability and environmental protection. They can be classified into five categories. As the application areas for space technology are growing, so are the opportunities for startups. In order to benefit from each other, we strive for close networking.

As part of this, the first Green Space Startup Summit was held at the Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart on December 2, 2021.

THE LÄND with Green Späce

Willkommen to THE LÄND. The Green Space Startups are divided into five categories. All startups from the international ESA BIC network are free to join. Just give us your mission on Green Space.

1
Ägriculture and Forestry

Agriculture and Forestry can benefit from space solutions: precision farming needs precise positioning through Galileo, GPS and co. Just digging and fertilizing, where it is needed, helps the environment a lot. Further, new kinds of food crops, including new ways of sensor based plant treatment, are beeing developed while planning deep space longtime missions. Last but certainly not least is the challenge to beat the nasty bark beetles habit of destroying our forest trees.

2
Environmentäl Observätions

"We only know about the well-being or distressed situation of our Earth through space missions," the German astronaut Ernst Messerschmid points out as his personal greatest benefit of space exploration. Many environmental observations which can directly cause actions are possible due to the wide and continuously growing possibilities of Earth Observation. EO will soon be part of our daily life as Satellite Navigation and Communication has become in the past decades.

4
Efficiency of New Späce

Bringing tourists into space is not particular eco-friendly. But engineering skills which help New Space missions gain efficiency - that makes sense. Further there is a need for the Swabian Kehrwoche in order to clean up the more and more polluted orbits in space.

New Mobility and Tränsportätion

Autonomous and shared driving are the thrilling challenges for mobility in the 21st century, far more than electrification. Empty cars and empty lorries are using infrastructure and resources more than necessary. We need more intelligence - swarm intelligence. And: The 3rd dimension of individual mobility is just beginning. Keep your seatbelt fastened: There is a lot to do for space solution driven startups.

Green Space Startup Summit 2021

The first Green Space Startup Summit was held at the Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart on December 2, 2021. At the event, 15 exhibitors shared their ideas and solutions.

Part of the agenda was a speech on "New Space - Bubble or Chance" by Christian Freiherr von der Ropp from ACCESS.SPACE. After the introduction and talks on the exhibition Stand the young companies were able to pitch their business ideas. An award ceremony followed: the Galileo Masters and Copernicus Masters as well as the Green Space prize were awarded to the winners. Afterwards, the participants exchanged ideas in a relaxed atmosphere.

Congratulations to the winners!

Success stories

Green Space Investor Award 2021

About 2 years ago, the startup Xylene started their one-year incubation period with ESA BIC in Reutlingen. At the Green Space Summit 2021, founders Christopher Edwards and Giuseppe Benenati received the Green Space Investor Award. Their service makes international supply chains trasparent through space technology and blockchain. Reflecting their mission: Sustainable supply chains are achievable today.

Green Space Audiance Award 2021

Protecting our planet & providing access to space. Those are the goals of Klaus Space Transportation. The startup recognizes that single-use, expendable rockets create a massive carbon footprint. That's why the team develops technology to recover and reuse rockets and return any kind of cargo from space. Founder Sebastian Klaus from Baden-Baden was pleased to receive the Green Space Audiance Award 2021.

22nd November 2021 Workshop: How to deal with Earth Observation Data?

++ Online Event ++

How can I have access to satellite data? This is often a question from people who are not used to deal with this data or who are at an early stage at their business related to space. On the 22nd November 2021, our Space Solutions Expert Marcin Bielecki gives an overview which satellite data is available and how to scope them.

The workshop is for all interested people who want to learn more about satellite data, especially earth observation data.
